The French electric mobility market — 2026 overview

In 2026 the French electric mobility market crossed several structural thresholds. The fleet of fully electric vehicles on the road now exceeds 1.8 million units, according to consolidated figures from Avere-France. New registrations accounted for 19.4% of the total in the first quarter, versus 16.8% in 2025. This steady progression points to a lasting rise in electromobility: electric vehicles are no longer a niche product reserved for early adopters, but are gradually becoming the logical choice for the average buyer.

On the infrastructure side, France has one of the densest public charging networks in Europe. The grid of 155,000 public charge points recorded at the end of 2025 represents a +37% increase compared with the previous year. The government target of 400,000 points by 2030 remains achievable at the current pace, driven by private operators (Tesla, Ionity, Electra, Fastned) and regional networks (Izivia, Lumiwatt, Bornes Solutions). Motorway service areas are now 100% equipped with rapid DC charge points of 150 kW or more, in line with the European AFIR regulation that came into force in 2024.

Beyond infrastructure, it is the diversification of uses that defines 2026. The electric car is no longer confined to urban use: average WLTP ranges now exceed 450 km, peaking at 600 or even 700 km on premium models (Mercedes EQS, BMW i7, Tesla Model S). DC rapid charging at 150-350 kW makes it possible to recover 300 km of range in 20 to 30 minutes on 800V architectures. Long-distance journeys are becoming perfectly feasible, provided there is minimal planning via apps such as ABRP or Chargemap.

The diversification of the manufacturer line-up

Competition between manufacturers intensified considerably in 2026. Tesla remains the leader in the premium saloon-SUV segment, but European brands (Renault, Peugeot, Volkswagen) are regaining market share thanks to renewed ranges and aggressive pricing. Renault made a strong impact with the 5 E-Tech at €25,000, heir to the legendary R5, which offers 410 km of WLTP range in a compact, stylish format. Peugeot overhauled its e-208 and e-308 range with better batteries and revised ergonomics. Volkswagen corrected the initial flaws of the MEB platform with the restyled ID.3 and the arrival of the ID.7.

Asian manufacturers have taken a significant place in the French market. Hyundai and Kia popularised the 800V architecture on the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, EV6 and EV9, offering charging times halved compared with the average. MG capitalised on aggressive pricing with the MG4 Electric offered at €31,000 for 450 km of range. BYD and Nio are beginning to establish a lasting presence, respectively with the Dolphin, the Seal and the ET5, which compete with high-end German models. Chinese brands now account for 11% of the French EV market (source: AAA Data).

On the American side, Tesla restyled the Model 3 in late 2023 (project Highland) and the Model Y in late 2025 (Juniper), consolidating its dominant position. Ford expanded its range with the Mustang Mach-E and the new Explorer EV built on the MEB platform. The electric van segment is also developing rapidly, with the Renault Kangoo E-Tech and Master E-Tech, Peugeot e-Partner and e-Expert, Ford E-Transit and Mercedes eVito. Tradespeople and delivery drivers now find solutions suited to their use cases, with ranges of 250 to 350 km.

The technologies that change everything in 2026

Three technologies underpin the 2026 shift in the EV market.

First, the 800V battery architecture is becoming widespread beyond the premium segment. Originally developed by Porsche for the Taycan in 2019, it doubles DC charging power at a given temperature, and therefore reduces rapid charging times. On a 2026 Ioniq 5 N, 10 to 80% in DC rapid charging takes 18 minutes on a 350 kW Ionity charge point. This technology is gradually becoming affordable: the Kia EV3 (from €37,000) benefits from it right from launch.

Second, LFP battery chemistries (lithium iron phosphate) are becoming mainstream. Cheaper to produce (around -15% versus NMC), more durable (cycle life up to 3x higher in some cases), they tolerate frequent charging to 100% better. Tesla rolled out LFP across the Model 3 and the Model Y Standard. BYD, the inventor of CTB (Cell-to-Body) technology, integrates LFP cells directly into the vehicle's structure, saving weight and space. LFP's historical drawbacks (lower energy density, cold-weather performance) are partly offset by pack optimisation.

Third, bidirectional V2H/V2G charging (Vehicle-to-Home / Vehicle-to-Grid) is entering the commercial phase. The Renault 5 E-Tech, the Nissan Leaf, the Kia EV9 and the Volkswagen ID.7 can now feed energy from their battery back to the home (during a power cut, for example) or to the grid (to balance national electricity production during peaks). This feature turns the car into a component of the domestic energy system, and opens the way to economic value (remuneration for flexibility by the grid operator).

The regulatory and fiscal ecosystem

The French regulatory framework remains a lever for EV development. The Mobility Orientation Law (LOM) of 2019 continues to impose its progressive obligations on company fleets: a minimum of 10% low-emission vehicles (EV or plug-in hybrid) on fleets of more than 100 registered vehicles from 2022, 20% in 2024, 40% in 2027, 70% in 2030. Non-compliant companies risk exclusion from public procurement (art. 73 LOM). The Élan Law of November 2018, modernised by implementing decree 2020-1720, enshrines the right to a socket in co-ownership properties. Any occupant of a collective building may request the installation of a charge point on their private parking space, at their own expense, without needing the prior agreement of the building manager or a vote at a general meeting. The building manager has 3 months to object, solely on serious and legitimate grounds (safety, structural integrity). In practice, more than 85% of requests are granted without legal recourse according to Avere-France. For collective infrastructure (equipping several shared spaces in the common car park), a vote at the general meeting is still required, generally by simple majority since the ELAN law of 2018.

On the tax side, the reduced 5.5% VAT on works still applies to the installation of a charge point in a residential dwelling completed more than 2 years ago, for a power of 3.7 kW or less (article 278-0 bis A of the General Tax Code). Above 3.7 kW, installation remains at 10% (the works rate) while the supply of equipment is at 20%. A simplified Cerfa 13948*05 certificate must be provided to the installer before the works. For businesses, VAT on the purchase and installation is fully deductible (a measure extended to 100% of the electricity consumed by EVs since 2020).

The 2027-2030 outlook

The outlook for the French electric market over the 2027-2030 period is structural. The European Union voted for the end of sales of new combustion vehicles in 2035, a target that shapes the industrial strategy of every major manufacturer. By 2030, the EV market share expected in France lies between 45 and 55% of new passenger car registrations. The fleet on the road is expected to exceed 10 million vehicles.

This ramp-up implies considerable infrastructure challenges: the rollout of public charge points (target of 400,000), the adaptation of the electricity distribution network (Enedis is investing more than €40 billion over 2022-2032 to reinforce the low- and medium-voltage grid), and the massive development of renewable generation capacity (solar and wind) to absorb growing demand. Smart charging capability will become essential to smooth demand peaks and make the most of off-peak hours.

For the end user, the outlook is rather reassuring: a downward trend in purchase prices (-30% expected over 2025-2030 on mass-market EVs, thanks to economies of scale on batteries), continuous improvement in range (a target of 600 km WLTP on entry-level models by 2030), a denser charging network (1 DC rapid charge point per kilometre of motorway by 2028), and the maturity of V2G, which will allow owners to be remunerated for the flexibility offered by their battery. Take a concrete case: a household with an electric vehicle that drives 15,000 km a year, consumes 17 kWh per 100 km, and charges 80% during off-peak hours at €0.18/kWh versus €0.25/kWh at peak times. The annual charging cost comes to around €385 at home, versus close to €1,250 on a standard public AC charge point and €1,800 on a motorway DC rapid charge point for the same mileage.

VAT) offers self-consumption estimated at 60% of production, or about 3,900 kWh/year dedicated to charging. Overall return on investment for the PV + wallbox combination: 8 to 12 years depending on sun exposure and the household consumption profile excluding the EV.

The mistakes to avoid at all costs

Among the most frequent mistakes our technicians encounter during audits, several recur and can be avoided upfront.

The first is the attempt at prolonged charging on a standard domestic socket (16 A) without reinforcing the circuit: at 2.3 kW continuously for 8 hours, a standard socket tires quickly, the contacts oxidise and can overheat. This practice is dangerous and should be strictly exceptional. Installing a reinforced Green'Up socket (3.2 kW) is a bare minimum, but a true 7.4 kW wallbox is clearly preferable for daily use.

The second common mistake is undersized cabling between the panel and the charge point. For a 7.4 kW charge point more than 20 metres from the panel, a cross-section of at least 6 mm² is required (10 mm² recommended for optimal performance). Installations carried out by non-professionals often use insufficient 2.5 mm², generating line losses (voltage drops) and a risk of overheating. The third mistake concerns electrical protection. The NF C 15-100 standard requires a 30 mA type A residual current circuit breaker as a minimum, with, in some cases (charge points > 11 kW), a type F or B to detect residual direct currents. The standard type AC protections of older panels are not compliant for IRVE installations. The fourth mistake, less technical but important, is the absence of a Consuel certificate. This document, issued following the conformity check by an approved body, is essential to certify the installation's compliance with the NF C 15-100 standard.
