“But what if I run out of charge? Are there enough chargers?” That's often the first question when someone is hesitating about switching to electric. Behind it lies a slightly mistaken view of the subject: we picture charging the way we picture filling up with petrol — a mandatory stop at a station, along the way, at regular intervals. But an electric car doesn't work like that at all.

The public network exists, it keeps getting denser, and it's valuable for certain uses. But to understand where it really helps, you first have to put things in the right order: the vast majority of charging doesn't happen in public — it happens at home, overnight, while the car is asleep. This article has a simple goal: to explain how public charging works — the places, the power levels, the access methods, roaming — and to give you an honest read on the role each link in the chain actually plays.

Charging isn't a “fill-up”: change your mindset first

With a petrol car, you drive until the tank is low, then fill up all at once. With an electric vehicle, the right mental model is the opposite: you top up in small increments, whenever the car is parked somewhere equipped for it. In the morning, you set off with a full battery, without having made the slightest detour.

This shift changes everything. The question is no longer “how many stations along my route?” but “where does my car spend the most time parked?” For most drivers, the answer is home, and secondarily the workplace. The public network mainly comes into play for the cases where home charging isn't enough: long journeys and drivers with no solution at home. Keep this logic in mind — everything else follows from it.

The different charging locations: each has its own purpose

We talk about “chargers” as if they were a single kind of object. In reality, charging doesn't mean the same thing depending on the place. Here are the main families of locations, from the most everyday to the most exceptional.

Home: the foundation of it all

This is by far the most common and most comfortable scenario. You plug in when you get home, the car charges quietly overnight, and you benefit from your own electricity rate, generally far cheaper than a public point. No queue, no app, no nasty surprise. The workplace

The second place a car stays parked for a long time: the employer's car park. An on-site charger lets you charge during office hours, which makes an excellent complement to home charging — or even a primary solution for those who can't equip their own home. This subject mainly concerns business equipment and office shared-building setups, each with its own arrangements.

On-street and public car parks

In cities, charging points are being rolled out along streets, in parking bays, and in multi-storey car parks. They meet a specific need: drivers without a private parking space, who can't run a cable to their vehicle. It's top-up charging, often at moderate power, designed to match the duration of an urban parking stay.

Shops, hotels and destination venues

Shopping centres, supermarkets, hotels, restaurants: more and more venues offer charging while you do something else. This is known as “destination” charging. You don't come to charge — you charge because you're already there. The use is opportunistic, and that's exactly how it should be.

The motorway and major routes

This is the classic image of public charging, and it's also the only case where speed becomes the number-one concern. On a long journey, you want to recover as much range as possible in as little time as possible, during a break. This is precisely where rapid and ultra-rapid charging makes complete sense — a use case that's rare in frequency, but essential when it comes up.

AC or DC charging: the real technical distinction

If there's only one technical concept to remember, it's this one. The whole logic of power levels and charging times follows from it.

Alternating current (AC): slow and accelerated

The majority of everyday chargers — home, work, on-street — deliver alternating current (AC). In this case, it's the car's onboard charger that converts this current to feed the battery. The power therefore depends on both the charger and what the vehicle accepts. We talk about slow or accelerated charging depending on the level.

This isn't a flaw: for a car sitting still for several hours, AC charging is more than sufficient and is gentle on the battery. It's the ideal regime for overnight or a working day.

Direct current (DC): rapid and ultra-rapid

The rapid and ultra-rapid chargers run on direct current (DC). This time, the conversion is done by the charger itself, which injects the current straight into the battery. That's what makes it possible to reach far higher power levels and recover a lot of range in a single break.

Two honest caveats, however. First, the power displayed by a charger is a maximum: the real speed depends on the vehicle, the battery's state of charge and its temperature. Second, charging naturally slows as the battery fills up. That's why, when travelling, you often charge up to 80% rather than 100%: beyond that, the time gained is no longer worth it.

How to match power to use

The common-sense rule is simple: match the power to the parking time. There's no point seeking out ultra-rapid charging where the car stays parked for eight hours — you'd be paying a lot for a speed you don't need. Conversely, at a motorway service area, DC is indispensable. Each location has its logical power level.

How you access a public charger

That leaves the practical question: you pull up at a charger — and then what? The landscape has become much simpler, even if it still has a few rough edges.

Roaming cards and badges

The traditional method relies on dedicated charging badges or cards. You sign up with a mobility provider, you receive a badge, and you present it on the charger to unlock the session. The benefit: a single billing point even if you use chargers operated by different players. This is the principle of roaming, which we come back to shortly.

Mobile apps

Most operators offer an app that lets you locate chargers, check their availability in real time, start a charge and pay. Many apps aggregate several networks, which saves you from collecting one per operator. It's become the main reflex for planning a journey.

Direct payment

The underlying trend is towards simpler payment. More and more chargers, particularly on major routes, accept direct payment — with no prior subscription or specific badge. The aim is clear: that a passing driver can charge without having signed up to anything in advance, just as you'd pay for any other service.

Operators and roaming: who does what

The public network can seem fragmented, because several trades are layered behind a single charger. Understanding this split helps you avoid getting lost.

On one side, there's whoever physically installs and operates the charging points. On the other, whoever sells you access to charging via a badge, a card or an app — your mobility provider. These two roles aren't necessarily held by the same entity.

This is where roaming comes in. Thanks to agreements between these players, your badge or your app can unlock chargers you could never otherwise have used, operated by third parties, with centralised billing. It's exactly the principle that lets you, in mobile telephony, make calls from abroad without changing operator. In practice, it's better to check the compatibility of your solution before a long journey rather than discovering it in front of the charger.

A word of honesty to close this point: public pricing varies from one network to another and from one access method to another. Rather than putting forward figures that would have no general value, remember the principle — compare your provider's terms and consult official sources and public mapping tools for up-to-date data.

The honest argument: why home charging remains king

Now that the picture is in place, we can put it plainly. Everything above describes a network that's useful, but supplementary. For the overwhelming majority of drivers, public charging serves two situations: long journeys and the absence of a home solution. The rest of the time, it should barely be needed.

Why does home charging win out? For very concrete reasons:

  • Comfort: you plug in when you get home, you leave fully charged. Zero detours, zero queues, zero apps.
  • Cost: you charge on your own electricity rate, generally far cheaper than a public point, and you can take advantage of off-peak hours.
  • Gentleness on the battery: a slow, overnight AC charge is kind to the battery, whereas repeated use of ultra-rapid DC should be reserved for trips.
  • Control: with a smart charger, you schedule the charge, you align it with your habits, and you can tie it in with solar production where relevant.

The public network, for its part, frees you up for the exceptions: heading off far away without stress, helping out a relative, charging while on the move. It's a fantastic safety net — but it isn't, and shouldn't be, your everyday solution if you have the option of equipping your own home.
