The most common mistake on a professional charging project? Buying the chargers first. Yet the charger is only the visible part of the project. What makes an installation successful is the upfront scoping: understanding the use cases, measuring the power actually available, choosing the right charging profile and organising operations over the long term. Here is a pragmatic method to approach your project in the right order and avoid the classic sizing pitfalls.

Scope the need before talking hardware

The first step is not technical: it consists of clarifying the use cases. A charger meant to recharge company cars overnight does not face the same constraints at all as a charging point for passing visitors, or as a utility fleet running all day long.

Before anything else, ask yourself the right questions:

  • How many vehicles to charge today — and how many two or three years out?
  • Which user profiles: employees, company cars, service fleet, visitors, customers?
  • What actual parking times on site? A vehicle parked for eight hours does not have the same needs as a van that has to leave within the hour.
  • What availability is expected: can a charger be occupied for several hours, or is fast turnover required?

Choosing the right charging profile

Once the use cases are scoped, the right instinct is to start from the available parking time, not from the highest power on the market. The logic is simple: the longer a vehicle stays plugged in, the less power it needs to recover the required range.

Schematically, there are:

  • Slow to standard AC charging (alternating current), suited to vehicles that park for long periods: employee parking, company cars charged overnight, office spaces.
  • Accelerated AC charging, for more frequent turnover or intermediate presence times.
  • Fast DC charging (direct current), reserved for cases where the vehicle has to leave quickly: tight logistics fleets, breakdown recovery, high-turnover transit points.

Keep in mind: these examples are only a reading grid. Oversizing is as penalising as undersizing — it inflates the connection and equipment costs without any usage benefit.

Sizing and managing the power

The most frequently underestimated point is the electrical power actually available on your site. Adding more and more chargers without accounting for the capacity of your grid connection can lead to overshoots, or even a costly reinforcement of the installation — exactly the kind of nasty surprise an audit rules out upfront.

Load management, the keystone of the project

This is where load management comes in. Rather than drawing maximum power on every charger simultaneously, a load management system intelligently distributes the available energy among the connected vehicles. In concrete terms, it makes it possible to:

  • Respect the limit of the subscription or the grid connection, without overshoot;
  • Prioritise certain use cases (a vehicle leaving early, a critical fleet);
  • Smooth out consumption to avoid the peaks that inflate the bill;
  • Avoid an electrical reinforcement that can often be done without when load management is well tuned.

For a vehicle fleet, this logic is decisive. The vehicles often come back at the same time — at the end of the day, in the same slot — but they don't all leave at the same hour. Well-configured load management recharges each vehicle in time for its next departure, without oversizing the installation to absorb a theoretical peak that doesn't need to exist.

Supervise, manage access and bill with OCPP

Once the chargers are installed, you still need to be able to operate them over the long term. This is the blind spot of many projects: people think of the commissioning day, rarely of the three years that follow.

Supervision

Access management

In a professional environment, not everyone should be able to charge everywhere. Depending on your needs, you can:

  • Reserve certain chargers for employees (badge, app);
  • Open other points to visitors during defined slots;
  • Track consumption per vehicle or per user.

The OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol), the sector's open standard, is central here. It ensures interoperability between the chargers and the supervision system, guarantees the feedback of charging data and frees you from depending on a single, closed supplier. Can I rebill the electricity consumed by company cars?

You can therefore rebill the kWh, allocate costs between entities or reimburse an employee charging their company car. Coupling this with load shedding also avoids exceeding the subscribed power.

Am I dependent on Volticom once the chargers are installed?
