MG capitalised on aggressive pricing with the MG4 Electric offered at €31,000 for 450 km of range. The technologies that change everything in 2026
Three technologies underpin the 2026 shift in the EV market. First, the 800V battery architecture is spreading beyond the premium segment. Originally developed by Porsche for the Taycan in 2019, it doubles the DC charging power at a given temperature, and therefore reduces rapid charging times. The historical drawbacks of LFP (lower energy density, cold-weather performance) are partly offset by pack optimisation.
Third, bidirectional V2H/V2G charging (Vehicle-to-Home / Vehicle-to-Grid) is entering its commercial phase. The Renault 5 E-Tech, Nissan Leaf, Kia EV9 and Volkswagen ID.7 can now feed energy from their battery back to the home (during a power cut, for example) or to the grid (to balance national electricity generation during peaks). This feature turns the car into part of the domestic energy system, and paves the way for economic value (payment for flexibility by the grid operator).
The regulatory and tax framework
France's regulatory framework remains a driver of EV growth. The 2019 Mobility Orientation Law (LOM) continues to impose its progressive obligations on company fleets: a minimum of 10% low-emission vehicles (EVs or plug-in hybrids) on fleets of more than 100 registered vehicles from 2022, 20% in 2024, 40% in 2027 and 70% in 2030. Non-compliant companies risk exclusion from public procurement (art. 73 of the LOM). The Élan Law of November 2018, updated by implementing decree 2020-1720, enshrines the "right to a socket" in co-owned buildings. Any occupant of a multi-unit building may request the installation of a charging station on their private parking space, at their own expense, without prior agreement from the building manager or a vote at a general meeting. The building manager has 3 months to object, and only for serious and legitimate reasons (safety, structural integrity). In practice, more than 85% of requests succeed without legal recourse, according to Avere-France. For shared infrastructure (equipping several shared spaces in the common car park), a vote at a general meeting is still required, generally by a simple majority since the ELAN law of 2018.
On the tax side, the reduced 5.5% VAT on works still applies to the installation of a charging station in a residential dwelling completed more than 2 years ago, for a power rating of 3.7 kW or less (article 278-0 bis A of the General Tax Code). Above 3.7 kW, the installation remains at 10% (the works rate) while the equipment supply is at 20%. A simplified Cerfa 13948*05 declaration must be provided to the installer before the works. For businesses, the VAT on purchase and installation is fully deductible (a measure extended to 100% of the electricity consumed by EVs since 2020).
The 2027-2030 outlook
The outlook for the French electric market over 2027-2030 is structural. The European Union has voted to end sales of new combustion-engine vehicles by 2035, a target that shapes the industrial strategy of all major manufacturers. By 2030, the expected EV market share in France stands between 45 and 55% of new passenger car registrations. The fleet on the road is expected to exceed 10 million vehicles.
This ramp-up implies considerable infrastructure challenges: rollout of public charging stations (target of 400,000), adaptation of the electricity distribution network (Enedis is investing more than €40 billion over 2022-2032 to reinforce the low- and medium-voltage network), and a massive build-out of renewable generation capacity (solar PV and wind) to absorb rising demand. Take a concrete case: a household with an electric vehicle that covers 15,000 km a year, consumes 17 kWh per 100 km, and charges to 80% during off-peak hours at €0.18/kWh versus €0.25/kWh at peak hours. The annual charging cost works out at around €385 at home, compared with nearly €1,250 on a standard public AC station and €1,800 on a rapid DC motorway station for the same mileage.

Mistakes to avoid at all costs
Among the most common mistakes our technicians encounter during audits, several recur and can be avoided upfront. The first is the attempt to charge for prolonged periods on a standard domestic socket (16A) without reinforcing the circuit: at 2.3 kW continuously for 8 hours, a standard socket tires quickly, the contacts oxidise and can overheat. This practice is dangerous and should be strictly exceptional. Installing a reinforced Green'Up socket (3.2 kW) is a bare minimum, but a real 7.4 kW wallbox is clearly preferable for daily use.
The second common mistake is undersizing the cabling between the panel and the charging station. For a 7.4 kW station more than 20 metres from the panel, a cross-section of at least 6 mm² is required (10 mm² recommended for optimal performance). Installations carried out by non-professionals often use insufficient 2.5 mm² cable, generating line losses (voltage drops) and a risk of overheating. The third mistake concerns electrical protection. The NF C 15-100 standard requires a 30 mA type A residual current breaker as a minimum, with in some cases (stations > 11 kW) a type F or B to detect residual direct currents.
