1. The 4 charging modes (Mode 1 to 4)

The international standard IEC 61851 defines 4 charging modes:

How does an IRVE installation work?

From your meter to your vehicle, each component plays a specific role. Here is the simplified wiring diagram of an installation certified to NF C 15-100:

ENEDIS grid (230 V / 400 V) → Linky meter (measures consumption) → Distribution board (main circuit breaker) → IRVE protection (30 mA type A RCD) → Wallbox (Type 2 socket) → Your EV (battery charged).

⚡ Dedicated wiring required — The connecting cable must have a minimum cross-section of 6 mm² (copper), type R2V, installed in conduit. Recommended length: 10 m max without derating.

■ Type A residual-current protection — Standard NF C 15-100 requires a dedicated 30 mA type A residual-current circuit breaker. Protection against the insulation faults specific to EV onboard chargers.

The charging market in France in 2026 — what you need to know

At the end of 2025, France had around 155,000 public charging points, a +37% increase compared with 2024 (source: Avere-France). The government target remains set at 400,000 points by 2030. For private individuals, home installation remains the most economical and most convenient solution: nearly 85% of EV charging happens at home or at the office.

The electric vehicle fleet now exceeds 1.8 million vehicles registered in France, and EVs account for more than 19% of new registrations in 2026 (passenger cars + light commercial vehicles). Can I install a three-phase charger if my home is single-phase? Yes, provided you ask Enedis for a power increase with a switch to three-phase. What is smart charging? Smart charging automatically manages charging based on your tariffs (off-peak hours), your photovoltaic output or the power available in the home. Does the installation require any administrative declaration? For a home installation (detached house or private flat), the Consuel certificate is issued by the IRVE installer once the NF C 15-100 compliance check is complete. No planning declaration is needed, except for a wall-mounted charger facing a public road (prior declaration of works).

How can I preserve my battery's lifespan? Best practices for 2026: stay between 20% and 80% charge for everyday use, limit DC fast charging to trips, precondition the cabin while charging in winter, and avoid leaving the vehicle in full summer sun with the battery at 100%. Average observed lifespan: 200,000 to 250,000 km with 80% remaining capacity.

5.5% VAT: what are the exact conditions? The reduced VAT rate of 5.5% applies to the supply and installation of a charging station in a residential dwelling completed more than 2 years ago, for a power of 3.7 kW or less. For powers of 7.4 to 22 kW, installation remains at 10% and supply at 20%. A simplified Cerfa 13948*05 certificate must be provided to the installer before the work. Outlook for 2026–2030

For businesses, the progressive electrification of fleets is governed by the LOM Law (article 77, codified in article L.224-10 of the French Environment Code): fleets of more than 100 vehicles face increasing obligations to include low-emission vehicles when renewing them, and both the thresholds and the timetable have changed since 2025.
