A well-sized onboard charger lets you recover a full night’s worth of range while you sleep. It’s the key parameter for home use.
  • Direct current (DC) charging: this is fast charging, at the high-power stations on motorway service areas. It’s measured by the peak power accepted and by the charging curve (how quickly the battery fills across the useful range). It’s what determines how long your stops last on long trips.

The takeaway: a vehicle with a large range but low AC power can be frustrating to charge at home, whereas a modest city car that’s well equipped for AC will be perfect day to day. Look at these figures as closely as you look at range.

The connector: Type 2 and CCS

Good news: the standard is now largely settled across Europe. Recent vehicles use a Type 2 plug for AC charging (home and slow stations) and the Combo CCS standard for fast DC charging.
