Pairing solar PV panels with an EV charging station is the ultimate strategy for near-free mobility in 2026. The idea boils down to one sentence: your panels generate electricity during the day, and your car uses it to drive. Solar charging in summer, smart Eco-Smart control, faster return on investment — it's the winning combination for anyone who wants to break free from both fuel dependency and the electricity bill.

This article explains how it works, how to size your installation according to your mileage, which wallboxes can genuinely sync with your solar production, and how much it can all save you. The figures we quote are indicative ballpark numbers: they depend on your roof, your usage and your context. For a precise amount, nothing replaces an on-site survey.

The principle of PV + EV self-consumption

Your solar panels generate electricity during the day. The challenge is to consume that production at the right moment rather than feeding it back to the grid at a low price. This is exactly where the charging station's smart control comes in.

Your Eco-Smart wallbox — for example a Wallbox Pulsar Plus or an Autel MaxiCharger PV — modulates the charging power according to your instantaneous production:

  • PV production of 5 kW → the wallbox charges at 5 kW.
  • PV production of 2 kW (passing cloud) → the wallbox automatically adjusts to 2 kW.
  • No production → the wallbox pauses charging or switches to the grid.

The result is twofold: near-free charging in summer, when the sun covers most of your needs, and a carbon footprint cut by 3 compared with conventional grid charging. Instead of being at the mercy of your production curve, you turn it into kilometres.

What PV sizing for an electric car?

It all starts with your annual mileage. The more you drive, the more solar power you need to install. Here are three concrete benchmarks to position your project:

  • 3 kWp (8 panels) — covers roughly 5,000 km/year in purely solar use.
  • 6 kWp (15 panels) — covers 12,000 to 15,000 km/year, on top of a standard household's consumption.
  • 9 kWp (22 panels) — suited to high-mileage drivers, with an additional heat pump and surplus fed back to the grid.

Budget-wise, allow an indicative range of €9,000 to €18,000 incl. VAT for the PV installation, depending on the power chosen and the complexity of the job (roof, orientation, connection). This cost is on top of the charging station, but it's the combined setup that pays for itself.

PV power Number of panels Usage covered
3 kWp 8 panels ~5,000 km/year in pure solar
6 kWp 15 panels 12,000–15,000 km/year + standard household consumption
9 kWp 22 panels High-mileage driver + heat pump + surplus fed back

Indicative PV installation budget: €9,000 to €18,000 incl. VAT depending on power and complexity. Figures to be confirmed by an on-site survey.

PV-compatible wallboxes

Not all charging stations can communicate with a solar installation. To genuinely make use of your production, you need a wallbox capable of modulating its power based on what your panels are producing. Here are the models we identify as PV-compatible:

  • Wallbox Pulsar Plus Eco-Smart — native integration, modulates its power via the solar meter.
  • Autel MaxiCharger PV — advanced dynamic load management, with feed-back handling.
  • Hager Witty Solar — integration via the myHager app.
  • Kostal Enector — 100% German solution, paired with Kostal inverters.

The choice depends on your inverter and your existing ecosystem. A well-chosen wallbox is what turns a simple solar installation into a truly self-sufficient charging station.

Volticom + qualified PV partners

Volticom is an IRVE installer (P1 + P2 qualifications): it's our job to install and connect your charging station in compliance with charging standards. For the photovoltaic side, we work with a network of certified QualiPV partners in the Île-de-France region.

The benefit of this approach is concrete: a combined panels + wallbox quote, a single point of contact and a single schedule. You don't juggle between two companies passing the buck; the project is coordinated end to end, from installing the panels to commissioning the charging station.

How much does it really pay off?

That's the question everyone asks, and the answer depends on your usage. For a typical profile — 15,000 km/year with a standard house — the savings add up as follows:

  • €1,400 in fuel savings per year (you drive on sunshine rather than petrol);
  • €800 off the EDF bill thanks to self-consumption of the rest of your production;
  • that is a total of around €2,200 in savings per year.

On this basis, the combined PV + wallbox return on investment sits at around 8 to 10 years. Beyond that, your panels keep producing and charging stays near-free: it's an investment that works for you over the lifetime of the installation.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do you need a qualified installer to pair solar panels with a charging station?

Yes, the charging-station side must be installed by an IRVE professional to remain compliant and covered by the warranties. Volticom is QUALIFELEC IRVE P1, P2 and P3, and coordinates the photovoltaic side through its IRVE-qualified partner installers. This way you have a single point of contact responsible for the entire project.

What charging-station power should you choose to drive on solar energy?

For home charging paired with solar, we install 7.4, 11 or 22 kW stations depending on your vehicle and your electrical installation. The right calibration depends on your production and your habits, which is precisely what the preliminary survey determines. You receive the costed recommendation in your quote within 48 hours after a complete brief, across France.

How much does installing solar panels plus a charging station cost?

The price depends on the solar power, the wallbox model and the complexity of the job, so it can't be quoted blind. At Volticom, the whole setup is costed free of charge in a quote — detailed and with no commitment — within 48 hours after the survey, across France. You get a single, clear combined quote covering both parts.

Are there grants for this type of installation?

ADVENIR does not fund chargers in individual houses. Projects in apartment buildings may qualify; for other uses, check the relevant scheme and confirm eligibility before work begins. We check this point during the survey and clearly include it in your quote. The goal is for you to know exactly what's left to pay before making any decision.

Is the charging station guaranteed if there's a problem?

Yes, your installation comes with a decennial liability insurance policy with AXA, subject to the declared activities, limits and terms of the current insurance certificate, and our work is covered by AXA insurance. If anything goes wrong, our after-sales service stays responsive to restore your charging. You're never left on your own after commissioning.

Does the installation comply with current electrical standards?

All our work complies with the NF C 15-100 standard and includes a 30 mA residual-current protection selected for the charger, its DC detection and the manufacturer’s instructions suited to electric vehicle charging. These protections secure your circuit and your home. Compliance is verified before the charging station is commissioned.

How long does installing the charging station take?

Installing and connecting the charging station is done within a timeframe confirmed after the site assessment once the survey is approved. The photovoltaic side is planned within the same schedule, coordinated by Volticom. This way you avoid drawn-out jobs and companies passing the buck.

Will my charging station really be able to sync with my solar production?

Yes, we select controllable, OCPP-compatible stations with load shedding to match the power to your production and your installation. This control avoids drawing on the grid when the sun is enough. The operating mode is defined precisely during the survey, based on your existing equipment.

Does Volticom operate outside the Île-de-France region?

Yes, we operate across France thanks to our network of IRVE-qualified partner installers, from our headquarters in Paris. You benefit from the same framework, the same qualifications and the same warranties wherever you are. Requesting a quote is simple, online or by phone.

Can you track and rebill the charging station's consumption?

Yes, our charging stations allow consumption tracking and rebilling of kWh, which is useful in shared buildings, businesses or for shared use. This management is configured to your needs during installation. To assess your case, request your free quote within 48 hours, across France on 09 55 92 66 32 or at contact@volticom.fr.

The Volticom approach

The solar panels + charging station combination is only worthwhile if it is sized for your usage and intelligently controlled. A charging station unable to sync with your production, or poorly calibrated solar power, and self-consumption stays theoretical.

That's why our method always starts with a survey before any costing: your mileage, your roof, your electrical installation and your charging habits determine the PV power, the wallbox model and the control mode all at once. You walk away with a single, clear combined quote covering both parts of the project.
