With the BYD Seal U, the Chinese manufacturer takes direct aim at the most hotly contested segment of the European market: electric family SUVs. And it's a serious bid. A generous 87 kWh battery, a claimed WLTP range of 500 km, 218 hp and a starting price of €46,390 that places the model squarely in very competitive territory. For a household that covers daily home-to-work commutes and loads up kids and luggage at the weekend, this SUV ticks plenty of boxes.

But once the BYD Seal U is sitting in the driveway, one question keeps coming back: how do you charge it properly, and above all at home? The answer depends on the battery, on the charging power the car accepts and on your electrical installation. In this guide, we go over everything you need to know to choose the right charger, estimate charging times and install a long-lasting solution at home. If you're just getting started with EVs, our beginner's guide to electric cars lays the groundwork before going further.

BYD Seal U: what you need to know about charging

Before talking chargers, you need to understand this SUV's specific charging characteristics. The BYD Seal U carries an 87 kWh battery, a comfortable capacity that lets it post up to 500 km of WLTP range. In practical terms, that means a single full charge comfortably covers a week of daily journeys for most drivers.

On the charging side, two worlds coexist. On alternating current (AC), the kind you use at home or at work, the Seal U accepts up to 11 kW. On direct current (DC), at the fast chargers found on motorways, it climbs to 140 kW, enough to recover a large part of its range in around 45 minutes. The car uses a Type 2 plug for AC charging and a CCS Combo connector for DC fast charging: these are the standards in force across Europe, so there's no exotic compatibility to worry about. To get a clear handle on kW and kWh, which come up again and again in this article, take a look at our explainer on kW and kWh to understand charging.

AC and DC charging: understanding the difference

The distinction between AC and DC charging is probably the most important thing to grasp when you own an EV. AC charging (alternating current) is what you get at home, at work and at the majority of local public chargers. It's slower, but it's also the gentlest on the battery and by far the cheapest. This is the mode you'll use day to day, most often overnight.

DC charging (direct current) is what fast chargers use, mainly installed along major road routes. It delivers far higher power to recover as much energy as possible in as little time as possible, but it's more expensive and reserved for long trips. For the BYD Seal U, AC charging tops out at 11 kW while DC charging rises to 140 kW: a gap of more than a factor of ten that neatly illustrates how the two uses complement each other. The winning habit: charge slowly and cheaply at home, and save fast charging for genuine long-distance needs.

How long does it take to charge the BYD Seal U at home?

Home charging time depends directly on the power of your charger. With an 87 kWh battery, here are the ballpark figures for a near-full charge (the figures are rounded and given as a guide; actual charging may vary with temperature and starting battery level):

Charging solutionPowerEstimated time (0-100%)
Standard socket2.3 kWabout 38 h
Reinforced socket3.7 kWabout 24 h
Single-phase charger (wallbox)7.4 kWabout 12 h
Three-phase charger (wallbox)11 kWabout 8 h

One key point: the BYD Seal U is limited to 11 kW on AC charging. That means installing a 22 kW charger would be pointless on this model: the car will never exceed the 11 kW its onboard charger accepts. A 22 kW charger would charge your Seal U at exactly the same speed as an 11 kW charger, but at a higher installation cost. So there's no point in oversizing. To dig deeper into these estimates, see our feature on electric car charging times in 2026.

The table makes it clear: a standard socket is best avoided for regular use, taking nearly two days for a full charge. A reinforced socket versus a proper charging station remains a stopgap, but it hits its ceiling quickly. For an SUV with an 87 kWh battery, only a dedicated charger offers real convenience.

Which charging station should you choose for the BYD Seal U?

This is the central question. Since the BYD Seal U accepts up to 11 kW on AC charging, two scenarios arise depending on your electrical installation.

  • A 7.4 kW (single-phase) charger already covers the vast majority of needs. An overnight charge at 7.4 kW restores enough range for normal days of driving, and this power is compatible with most domestic meters without major modifications.
  • An 11 kW (three-phase) charger lets you make full use of the Seal U's AC charging capacity and cut charging time to around 8 hours. It's the ideal choice if your home already has a three-phase supply and you want the fastest possible home charging.

On the other hand, a 22 kW charger would be completely pointless on this model: since the car is capped at 11 kW on AC, you'd be paying for power the Seal U will never be able to use. The 7.4 vs 22 kW charging station debate has a simple answer here. To check what your installation can handle, read our article on the meter capacity needed for a charging station. And for a complete selection method, our guide on how to choose your charging station in 2026 details all the criteria.

Fast charging for long trips

While home charging covers everyday driving, the BYD Seal U is well equipped for long trips too. Thanks to its 140 kW DC charging power, it can recover a significant share of its range in around 45 minutes at a motorway fast charger. That's enough to get back on the road after a coffee break, without turning every stop into an endless wait.

On a major route, the strategy is simple: you don't try to fill the battery to 100% at a fast charger, because charging speed slows down sharply beyond 80%. Instead, aim for the 10 to 80% range, where power stays high, then set off again. With 500 km of WLTP range and efficient DC charging, the Seal U lends itself well to holiday trips. To plan your stops, our guide on motorway charging on a long trip will help you plan with peace of mind.

How much does home charging cost?

The cost of a charge is simple to work out: energy drawn from the grid × the price per kWh in your contract. As a reference, here are the prices of EDF’s regulated “Tarif Bleu” in force since 1 August 2026: €0.2001 incl. VAT per kWh on the Base option (6 kVA); on the off-peak option, €0.1589 per kWh at night and €0.2142 during peak hours (prices published by EDF, in French).

Energy added to the batteryOff-peak hoursBase option
10 kWh€1.59€2.00
20 kWh€3.18€4.00
30 kWh€4.77€6.00
40 kWh€6.36€8.00

To estimate a charge for your BYD Seal U, check the battery capacity on the specification sheet of your version: it varies with the model year and trim. A 20 to 80% charge adds about 60% of that capacity.

These amounts cover the energy stored in the battery. Charging losses come on top: in 2026 the German motoring club ADAC measured them on five cars, charging from 10 to 90%, at 5.1 to 7% on an 11 kW wallbox and 12.7 to 24.2% on a household socket (ADAC study, in German). The amounts exclude the subscription and the installation. Charging during off-peak hours cuts the price per kWh by about a quarter compared with peak hours. Our guide to home charging costs explains the method, and our feature covers scheduling charging for off-peak hours.

It's precisely this post-installation support that sets a qualified installer apart from a mere low-cost provider.

Is a smart charger worth it for my BYD Seal U?

Yes, and it's actually a real lever for everyday savings. An OCPP-compatible smart charger enables load shedding and dynamic power management, automatically triggers charging during off-peak hours and, if needed, offers re-billing of the kWh consumed. On the Seal U's 87 kWh battery, scheduling overnight charging makes a concrete difference to your electricity bill.

What grants are available to install a home charger in 2026?

Three rules apply in 2026. Installing a charging station can qualify for the reduced 5.5% VAT rate when it is fitted in a home for its residents, with a Type 2 socket or connector (or a reinforced Type E socket), by a qualified installer (French Tax Code, art. 278-0 bis). The income-tax credit for buying and installing a charger no longer applies to expenses paid since 1 January 2026 (service-public.gouv.fr). The ADVENIR grant does not fund chargers at detached houses; in apartment buildings it may apply under conditions to be checked before the work (ADVENIR conditions). Prices and grants are covered in detail in our installation price guide.

In summary

The BYD Seal U is a well-conceived electric family SUV: an 87 kWh battery, 500 km of WLTP range, 11 kW on AC charging and up to 140 kW on DC fast charging. For home charging, the equation is clear: a 7.4 kW charger is enough for most drivers, and an 11 kW three-phase charger offers the maximum possible charge on this model. The 22 kW option adds nothing, since the car is capped at 11 kW on AC.

To make the most of your Seal U, the key is to have a charger installed properly, by a qualified professional. Volticom, qualified QUALIFELEC IRVE, supports you from the installation of your home charger all the way to after-sales service, with a decennial liability insurance policy with AXA, subject to the declared activities, limits and terms of the current insurance certificate and coverage throughout France.
