“Is it really worth it?” That’s the question that comes up most often when a future customer calls us about a charging station. Behind it lies a legitimate hesitation: the electric car is presented sometimes as the miracle solution, sometimes as a false good idea. The truth, as is often the case, lies somewhere in between — and it depends enormously on your situation.

This article isn’t meant to sell you on electric at any cost. Our business is installing charging stations: we talk to people who have already made the switch as well as to others still on the fence. So we see concretely what actually plays out… and what stays theoretical. So let’s review the real benefits of the electric car, and above all the conditions that make them true in your case. As you’ll see, one common thread keeps coming back — most of these benefits are fully realised when you can charge at home.

Running costs: the strong argument, but a conditional one

Let’s start with the one that motivates the most people: driving on electricity generally costs less per kilometre than driving on fuel. It’s a real benefit, and it becomes particularly clear when you charge at home, during off-peak hours. The principle is simple: the electricity used at night, on a suitable tariff, is billed at a more advantageous rate than during peak hours, and there’s no comparison with regularly stopping at the pump.

But this is where the first honest caveat comes in, and it’s a big one. This benefit assumes you can charge at home. If you rely exclusively on rapid charging on motorways or on public on-street stations, the maths changes radically: those solutions are convenient but far more expensive per kilowatt-hour. In other words, the saving isn’t a magic property of the electric car — it’s the consequence of a usage pattern, namely controlled charging at home.

In practice, the difference comes down to several levers: your electricity contract (off-peak option, subscribed power), your annual mileage, and your ability to plug in at night. The more you drive and the more you charge at home, the more the benefit materialises. That’s exactly why we always start by studying your installation: without a suitable charging station, the main economic argument remains partly theoretical.

Driving comfort: an immediate and underrated benefit

On this point there’s almost no caveat to add, and that’s rare enough to be worth highlighting. Driving an electric vehicle is quiet, smooth and relaxing. Torque is available instantly, with no gearbox jolts, and the absence of engine noise transforms the experience, especially in town and on daily journeys.

This comfort also has a collective side: less traffic noise means a calmer urban environment. Many drivers tell us it’s precisely this pleasure, more than the financial argument, that won them over once they got behind the wheel.

The only honest caveat comes down to personal feel. The quietness and the “one-pedal” driving throw some people off at first, and the pleasure can’t be quantified: it’s a matter of habit and taste. But unlike the cost saving, this benefit depends on no particular condition — it’s there from the very first kilometre, whether you charge at home or elsewhere.

Reduced maintenance: fewer parts, fewer breakdowns

An electric motor has far fewer moving mechanical parts than a combustion engine. No oil changes, no timing belt, no conventional clutch, no exhaust system: the list of maintenance operations shrinks. Add to that regenerative braking, which puts less strain on pads and discs by recovering energy when slowing down. Over time, this means a lighter expense item and fewer trips to the workshop.

The caveat here isn’t meant to play down the benefit but to be precise about it. An electric vehicle still needs maintenance — tyres, fluids, brakes, safety components — and it isn’t immune to breakdowns. Above all, the part that draws the most attention is the battery: its lifespan and the terms of its warranty are things to examine seriously, since it’s the vehicle’s central component. Here again, your charging habits come into play: charging mostly slowly and in a controlled way at home is generally gentler on the battery than systematically relying on rapid charging. Reduced maintenance is therefore a real benefit, provided you reason in terms of overall cost and not just the operations you avoid.

Access to low-emission zones: a benefit that depends on your area

Low-Emission Zones (ZFE) and the air-quality sticker system are gradually restricting the most polluting vehicles from driving in certain urban areas. On this front, the electric vehicle benefits from the most favourable classification: it keeps its right to drive where restrictions apply, both today and under the planned evolution of these zones.

For anyone who lives or works in an affected city, this is a very concrete benefit: no time-of-day constraints, no risk of being denied access as the rules tighten. It’s sometimes even a decisive criterion for professionals whose business depends on access to the city centre.

The caveat is purely geographical, and it matters: this benefit only has value if you are affected by a low-emission zone. If you live in a rural area or in a town with no restrictions, the benefit is nil today — even if it may become relevant tomorrow depending on how the rules evolve. Conversely, for a city dweller it’s an advantage measured not in euros but in long-term peace of mind.

The carbon footprint in use: real, but read it honestly

This is probably the most debated topic, and the one where intellectual dishonesty is most common, in both directions. Let’s be clear: in use, an electric vehicle emits no CO₂ from its tailpipe, and French electricity rests on a very largely decarbonised mix. During the driving phase, the carbon advantage over a combustion vehicle is therefore very real, especially in a country with a low-emission electricity mix.

But honesty requires two caveats. The first: the outcome depends on the electricity mix used for charging. Charging with heavily carbon-intensive electricity reduces the advantage; the French context is favourable, but this isn’t a universal law. The second: serious reasoning doesn’t stop at the use phase. Manufacturing the vehicle, and its battery in particular, carries an initial environmental cost that must be amortised over the kilometres driven. It’s across the whole life cycle that the impact is truly judged.

Our position is therefore nuanced and assumed: electric is a credible lever for decarbonisation, particularly in the French context and for anyone who drives enough to amortise the upfront footprint. It’s neither a “zero-impact” car nor an ecological mirage. It’s a tool whose benefit is built over time and with consistent use.

Purchase and installation subsidies: a helping hand, not a guarantee

One last benefit often cited: financial support. Depending on the schemes in force, buying an electric vehicle can qualify you for certain subsidies, and above all — this is our core business — installing a home charging station benefits from several support levers: reduced tax, bonuses and local subsidies depending on the area. The tax credit no longer applies from 1 January 2026.

The caveat we keep repeating applies here too: these schemes change regularly, their rates shift from one year to the next, and a figure found online is only valid as of its date. Let’s go back over the list with a bit of perspective. The advantageous running cost assumes charging at home during off-peak hours. Battery-friendly maintenance is made easier by slow, controlled charging at home. Installation subsidies concern precisely your charging point. Even the carbon footprint is built on regular use that only convenient day-to-day charging makes possible.

You can see the pattern: the electric car keeps most of its promises when you have your own charging station. Without one, the experience remains workable but constrained — more expensive, more restrictive, less seamless. Home charging isn’t a comfort accessory: it’s the link that turns theoretical benefits into concrete ones. It’s also, quite simply, the reason our business exists.

Does an electric car’s range really drop in winter?

Yes, the cold temporarily reduces real range, because heating the cabin and keeping the battery at temperature consume energy. Having a home charging station largely offsets this drawback: you recover a full charge every night, and some models precondition the battery while plugged in. It’s a concrete case where controlled charging at home turns a seasonal constraint into a simple habit.

How much does a full charge at home cost compared with a public station?

The exact rate depends on your electricity contract, but charging at home, especially during off-peak hours, is generally far cheaper than a public on-street station or rapid charging on the motorway. What’s the difference between a charging station and a wallbox?

A wallbox is simply the common term for a wall-mounted station installed at home: both refer to the same dedicated charging equipment, as opposed to a reinforced socket or a public station. We install models from 7.4 kW single-phase up to 11 or 22 kW three-phase, fitted to the NF C 15-100 standard with a 30 mA type B residual-current device. The right model is chosen during the on-site survey, based on your electrical panel and your vehicle.

Can a charging station be installed in a co-owned building or a flat?

Yes, it’s possible thanks to the “right to plug in”, which allows a resident to have their charging point installed in their parking space, including in a co-owned building. The process involves informing the building manager and a technical survey of the supply from the common areas. Do you need a specific subscription to charge your electric car at home?

No subscription to a charging operator is needed at home: you use the electricity from your usual contract, ideally combined with an off-peak option to optimise the cost. Does a charging station increase a property’s value?

Having a station installed by the book is an appreciated selling point when reselling or letting, since it spares the future occupant the paperwork and the cost of the equipment. It still needs to be compliant and properly sized: a station fitted to the NF C 15-100 standard, secured and covered by a warranty, is more reassuring than a rough-and-ready setup. Is regenerative braking enough to avoid changing the brake pads?

Regenerative braking puts noticeably less strain on the pads and discs, which significantly extends the interval between replacements, but it doesn’t eliminate it entirely: mechanical brakes remain essential for emergency stops and low speeds. This lighter maintenance is one of the real benefits of going electric, provided you reason in terms of the vehicle’s overall cost. The safety of your charging, for its part, rests on a compliant installation with a 30 mA type B residual-current device.

Does a charging station use electricity on standby?

A station’s consumption at rest is negligible and bears no comparison with the energy actually transferred during charging. The models we install include dynamic energy management and load shedding, which adjust the power according to the home’s consumption to avoid any waste or tripping. The economic question therefore plays out far more on optimising off-peak hours than on the device’s standby.

Can you resell the electricity from your station to third parties or rebill the charging?

Yes, some of our stations, which communicate using the OCPP protocol, allow rebilling per kWh, which is useful for separating out the vehicle’s consumption, for example in a professional setting or in shared housing. This function precisely measures the energy delivered at each charging session. We assess this need during the on-site survey to choose a model suited to your usage.
